Meet Michael Simmons, DMD, MScMed, MPH, MSc, FAASM, FAAOP, FAGD
Dr. Michael Simmons received his D.M.D. from The University of Pennsylvania school of dental medicine in 1981. After 5 years in general dental practice, he returned to UCLA to complete two years training in TMJ and pain management. He has lectured internationally and has served as a part time lecturer at UCLA since 1987. In addition he is a clinical assistant professor at USC.
Dr. Simmons is considered one of the pioneering dentists in sleep medicine. Not only is he involved with the politics of sleep medicine, but also educates other dentists and has lectured to multiple National and State sleep societies, published original research, and taught at several dental schools on this topic. Dr. Simmons is the first practicing dentist worldwide to be awarded the Fellowship in Sleep Medicine by the AASM (physician sleep group), for his contributions to the field of sleep medicine.
Dr. Simmons is a leader in public health issues and has special interest in snoring and OSA. In 2024, Dr. Simmons was an invited lecturer at both the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) which are the world’s leading sleep societies. Last year Dr. Simmons presented information to the California Dental Association (CDA) at the CDA House of Representatives about dentists diagnosing OSA and using home sleep testing devices. Dr. Simmons wrote a Resolution that passed to enable dentists to help patients get diagnosis of HPV. Dr. Simmons was also recruited as a subject matter expert by the AADSM to help write a consensus paper that was published in 2024 on emerging new therapies provided by dentists for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
